Question

I recently changed my oil. The oil filter was dry. Does that mean the oil pump is gone or is there another explanation?

How many hours does it take to replace the oil pump if that is what the problem is? Would it be better to just replace the engine as well?

Info Request

Hello XXXXXXXXXXXX, was there any sign of oil in the filter? Does the oil light come on or is there any noise from the engine?

Reply

No, no sign of oil on/in the filter. The oil light has not come on, in fact I always check the oil gauge everyday, it registers full. The engine runs and sounds as smooth as it always has.

What brand of filter was on there?

A Valvoline Filter...The last oil change, I had a Valvoline service center change my oil.

Accepted Answer

The oil pump should be fine if the pressure was fine and there was no noise. They place may have installed the wrong filter. Put a new filter on, preferably Motorcraft, and then start the vehicle and let it run for a minute and then turn it off. Then loosen the filter and see if you get any oil. If not there may be a blockage in the system.

Thank you for the great answer. I never considered that the Valvoline oil change center put the wrong or defective filter on my Ford Explorer. I wrongly assumed it was the oil pump.

My vehicle is running fine now. Thank you for your attention and thoughtful answer.
