I'm pretty sure that it was from IRS- Federal goverment, for it was aTW (Treasury warrant with a serial number.
Upon receipt of the money I immediately contacted IRS Fresno office- Refund section and inform them of the error.The lady on the other line said ( after reviewing most probably my records) said that there was no such an amount sent to my personal checking account. However they will investigate. Two years has passed and I have not heard from IRS. I called them up again, however, I was instructed that the Taxpayers Advocacy Services of the IRS might be able to help. I was able to talk to a Mr. Berber svc. agent #2800367 and I was given an address where to sent the money. I have my doubts about that address 'cause I tried tracing it with my computer but couldn't find the place.
The money most probably came from the IRS, because it came the same time with our tax refund.
I want to sent it back to the right dept of the IRS who can sent me back a sort of a "Recall Letter" for the money and who can issue me an official receipt for the returned money.
My suggestion if you want a receipt is to use an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers, your source for personal tax help.
It wil be difficult to get a receipt for this if you use the mail.
You can find a local office location, hours and phone number at Contact My Local Office in California You should take the check and any correspondence you got with it to the local office.
