Question

1996 GMC Yukon starting problems...I do not drive the car everyday and let it sit 10 days at a time...well it turns over and just doesn't start. I put some fuel booster in tank and put some high-test in the tank and jumped the battery over the last weekend. It finally started and ran well! I ran it for an hour over road and parked it. I tried to start in the morning----it cranked well but would not start again! any suggestions? Thanks David

Answer

Hi David. Welcome to justanswer.com! I have seen this problem hundreds of times on chevy trucks. The FIRST thing you're gonna want to do is have the fuel pressure checked. Also what engine is in the truck? Is it a tune port injection engine, or a throttle body injection? I will answer any questions you have. I am committed to meeting your satisfaction! Thanks

I bought this vehicle used and do not know if is port injected or throttle injected...how do i detect that and what do i do if it is either----or are the solutions totally different and complicated?

Answer

Well the reason I wanted to know is because a T.B.I only runs about 15psi of fuel pressure. A T.P.I engine runs around 60psi of fuel pressure. A TBI car will have the air filter right on top of the engine. A TPI engine will have the air filter off to the side of the engine connected by an air duct.

Wow----it is already cold here in Northern New Jersey!!! I just opened the filter cover and it must be a TPI because it is positioned on the passenger side of the engine compartment...does this help? If it is the lack of pressure, what causes that...and do I try to start or have it towed to shop?

Answer

The winter always comes to soon doesn't it, haha. So yes, it's a TPI engine. If you check the fuel pressure it should be around 60 psi when you turn the key on, and about 55-60psi when it is running. If you don't have a fuel pressure guage to check this, next time you go to start it....cycle the key a couple of times from off to run (w/o cranking). Once you've cycled it a couple of times try to start it. When you cycle the key to on, the fuel pump runs for 3-5 seconds. If you do this it will build the fuel pressure up to where it should be. If it seems to start when you do this, that means the fuel pressure is leaking down over night. Most likely leaking back into the gas tank. Does this make sense? To answer your question, there won't be any harm doen by driving it to the shop. Let me know if there is anything else that I can do for you. I do whatever I can to meet your satisfaction! Thanks!

OK...I am almost there! If I cycle the fuel pump as you suggest and it does not start, what does that mean? When I bring it to the shop, what do I expect to hear from the mechanic...bad fuel pump, leaking fuel tank???

Accepted Answer

If I had to put my money on it, I would bet that they find a problem with the fuel pump assembly. Sometimes the fuel pump is too weak to build up enough pressure.
