Question

My 10 pound male maltese got hold of a "Lip Smacker" chapstick and chewed it up. It looks like he ingested about 1/4 of the entire chapstick tube. His behavior appears normal, and so far now vomit. Will he be okay?

Hi there and thanks for your question.

The chances of your dog developing a serious problem from ingesting chapstick are pretty small. We will often suggest using chapstick on dogs with crusty noses, so it must be safe for ingestion.

The ingredient list in the Lip Smacker chapstick is: Castor oil, Beeswax, Cetyl Acetate, Candelilla Wax, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Polybutene, Sesame Oil, Ozokerite, Carnauba, Brazilian Wax Palm, Coperinicia Cerefera, Acetylated Lanolin Alcohol, Mineral Oil, Hydrogenated Soy Glycerides."

None of these should be toxic. However, if enough was ingested it could cause some stomach upset and perhaps a little diarrhea. It should be quite temporary though.

If you wanted to be absolutely sure you could contact ASPCA poison control.

The number is (888) XXX-XXXX. A $60 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card.

I hope this information helps! If you have more questions regarding this problem, just hit reply. If I am online I will respond right away. Otherwise I will respond as soon as I come online again. Or, if my answer is sufficient, then please hit accept. Thanks!
