Question

I own a 2006 f-150 with a 5.4 liter triton engine. I recently took my truck in to adress a valve/lifter tick that started about 2 weeks prior. I was told that they could solve the pecking sound but that there was about 1/4 inch of play in the crankshaft and that the top end of the engine was being slowly starved of oil flow. Therefore the fix was only temporary and it was a matter of less than 20,000 miles before I was looking at major engine failure. I was told that it was 2 different problems. 1. The use of aftermarket oil filters. 2. An inherent problem with the late 06 and 07 5.4s. The truck has 117,000 highway miles, has had 0 problems before now, and has always been properly maintained. I am just amazed that this could be possible and I have gotten conflicting reports about this being an inherent problem. I also have found nothing on the web confirming this. Please advise.

I'm a shop foreman for a large dealer and I haven't heard of any inherent problems with 06/07 F150 5.4's. I know of a tsb for stuck valve lash adjusters that cause a loud ticking noise in the valve train area. Depending on the engine build date your truck may have had this issue. Ford is always big on aftermarket oil filters, some of them allow oil to drain back causing top end noise on start-up's.

The Ford tech I spoke with said they could fix the valve lash adjusters but that within 10,000 miles the problem would re-occur. What is your opinion about the crank shaft being able to be pulled out 1/8 inch, and do you recomend having the valve lash adjusters repaired or do you see a future larger problem with the engine. The truck was manufactured in 08-06.

ISSUE:

Some vehicles equipped with 4.6L, 5.4L, and 6.8L 3-valve engines built between 1/11/2006 and 2/14/2006 may exhibit a loud ticking noise in the valve train area. This may be caused by a stuck/collapsed lash adjuster.

ACTION:

Verify engine build date, isolate, and replace any stuck/collapsed lash adjuster by following the Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Check date code on the engine, located on the engine timing cover.
    1. Date code between 1/11/2006 and 2/14/2006, proceed to Step 2.
    2. Date code NOT between 1/11/2006 and 2/14/2006, this TSB does not apply, perform normal diagnostics.
  2. Isolate the source of the noise to the cam cover on either Bank 1 or Bank 2. If the noise is not isolated to either cam cover, this TSB does not apply. Follow normal Workshop Manual (WSM) procedures for additional diagnostics.
  3. Remove the appropriate cam cover.
  4. Check for stuck/collapsed lash adjuster(s) by placing the cam lobe on the base circle and inspecting for loose cam followers as a result of the lash adjuster plunger being bottomed out.

    NOTE:A COLLAPSED LASH ADJUSTER WILL RESULT IN EXCESSIVE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE LASH ADJUSTER AND THE CAM FOLLOWER.

    NOTE:WHEN CHECKING "3V" LASH ADJUSTERS - A "SPONGY" LASH ADJUSTER IS NORMAL WHEN OIL PRESSURE IS "NOT" APPLIED.

     

  5. Replace only the affected lash adjuster(s) on the affected bank(s) following the procedures outlined in the appropriate WSM, Section 303.

I still don't know if your engine is under tsb because I would need the number from the engine, I know the truck was manuf in 8/06 but engine was build before that.

 

I f it was me I would get the valve lasher done, I haven't seen a crankshaft problem on any 06/07 yet. Not to say your truck doesn't have a issue with the crankshaft I just haven't seen or read that anywhere.

I enclosed the tsb so you could read it.

I did not get the last part of your message about your recommendation until Tues A.M. Thanks for your help. I will take my f-150 to another dealership and ask them their opinion as well. You have at least created enough doubt in my first diagnosis that I won,t just buy a new truck without confirming I have terminal engine failure in the near future.
