Question

We have six hens which we keep for our own egg production. I believe the hens are about 3 - 4 years old. One hen has become very lethargic and has been off her feed for a few days. She is remaining on her perch and appears to be bloated. Could she be egg bound and if so how can this be treated.

Hello,

Yes, your hen could be egg bound, but there are a number of other conditions that can cause these symptoms, as well, from parasites to peritonitis. The best thing to do is have the hen examined by a vet to determine the exact problem.

There's one first aid measure for egg bound birds that you can try. Put some K-Y Jelly or a similar lubricant in the cloaca. Do this very gently, and don't try to go in very far. You can also try giving the hen a soak in a shallow warm bath. The following site has more information on egg binding and other conditions that can cause bloating, lethargy, and appetite loss. It includes some more advanced ways to resolve egg binding. My first recommendation, however, is to see a vet.
