Question

2002 M3, starter spins but does not engage. Removed and bench tested, works fine. Checked out both positive wires from the battery to the starter, .2 ohms. I am not getting power to the starter? The voltage to the solenoid is 11.9 and drops to 8.45 while cranking. I checked the ground from the block to the frame it was .2 ohms. Ran a seperate ground (jumper cable) from the tranny to the - on the battery. I have TIS and Etk, they do not tell me which relay controls the solenoid power? I have been in service all my life and work on a lot of equipment. This is driving me nuts!!! Any help would be much appriciated.

Answer

Thanks for choosing JA

1. Electronic Driveaway Protection System (EWS) is a means of preventing starting of the vehicle by an unauthorized key or other means. The EWS module reads the transponder chip from the key in the ignition and compares it to key data stored in the EWS module. If the key checks out the EWS will allow voltage to the starter relay. The engine control module then has the ability to operate the starter by grounding the control side of the starter relay. As with other systems, the EWS also requires the vehicle to be in park or neutral for automatic transmission cars or clutch depressed on manual transmission vehicles. On some vehicles the park/neutral switch position is sent to the EWS module from the transmission control module. Verify 12 volts coming from the transmission control module to the proper pin on the EWS when vehicle is in park or neutral.

2. During starter operation the EWS compares a rolling code table which is stored in memory to what should be the same rolling code table that is stored in the engine control module. If the tables match up, the engine control module will begin spark and injection operations. If the tables don't match, the engine will crank but not start.

3. If the EWS was replaced, the vehicle will need to be coded so the other control modules in the vehicle know that a new EWS has been installed.

4. After coding it may be necessary to perform the alignment procedure between the engine control module and the EWS module. The alignment procedure tells the control modules to start their rolling code tables at line 1. If both tables match up, the engine control module should then begin spark and injection operations.

Tim,

This is a manual trans, the starter is spinning but I am not getting power to main power wire on the solenoid. I have two main power wires to the solenoid. I read, the hood switch will open one of these wires so it does not flash the alternator while cranking to give the starter all the power. The key will unlock the doors, trunk etc..

The clutch is in and trans in neutral, it would not spin if it was locked out.

Do you know which relay sends power to the solenoid?

Do you know how the other main power wire is controlled, I see the neutral control wire going to it. I have removed this main power wire and left the other one coming directly from the battery. It still just spins and does no throw into the flywheel. I have ordered new relays, they are cheap. The car would not start a couple of months ago, the dealer replaced a relay and it has worked fine. It would crank and spin, it was a fuel issue.

Answer

Hi thanks for the response,
Again,
During starter operation the EWS compares a rolling code table which is stored in memory to what should be the same rolling code table that is stored in the engine control module. If the tables match up, the engine control module will begin spark and injection operations. If the tables don't match, the engine will crank but not start.

I have added more information about relays
