Optional Information

Age: <1; Male; Breed: Boston Terrier

Already Tried:
My Boston is 9 mos old and he was recently boarded. He had some diarrhea when he came home, and I was advised here to give him some rice with his meal, which seemed to do the trick. However, he just had some more diarrhea, not much. He is acting normal, though. No blood, no lethargy. He is also current on his vaccs. Not sure, but could this be worms?

Info Request

Hello jessica25,

Could I get a little more information?

Has there been any vomiting?

How long ago was the original episode of diarrhea?

has there been any change in the diet other than the rice?

Does he get treats or rawhides?

No vomiting, the original episode was when he was brought back from the kennel, which was about a week ago, and no changes in the diet recently. He has no rawhides, but does have one kind of treat. I believe it has some peanut butter in it. It is a treat I get from the Petco treat bar.

Accepted Answer

Hello again,

Since he is acting fine and is current on vaccinations - I wouldn't rush to the vet unless this doesn't get better or he begins developing other symptoms. Dogs can definitely get diarrhea from being stressed. This can take awhile to get over and may be more sensitive for a bit. It could possibly be worms or other parasites like giarrdia. These are things that he could get from a kennel. It would be a good idea to bring a stool sample into the vet to be checked. Usually what I recommend for home treatment of diarrhea is to fast the dog for 12 - 24 hours (water available). Then feed the bland and bulky diet of boiled chicken and rice (2/3 rice) for several days. Then slowly transition back to normal diet over another couple of days. You can also give several over the counter medicaiton for diarrhea. I have found immodium to be very helpful. The normal dosage is half of the regular 2mg tablet for a 20 - 25 lb dog. This can be repeated in 8 - 12 hours. It usually only takes one or two doses to be effective. Here is a link to more information about these medications. (I always recommend checking with your vet prior to giving any medications)
