Question

My pet guinea pig is 4 years old. His companion of 2 years (a rabbit) escaped from it's hutch about a week ago and has been lost. Since then, the guinea pig has been acting fine until yesterday when he stopped eating. Also his eyes are dull and flat with some discharge at the corners, and he is unusually listless. We have found lots of specks all over the guinea pig's fur, which show up as pale on his dark fur and dark on his white fur. Do you think my guinea pig has got lice or mites? What should i do?

Hi XXXXXXXXXXX,

I'm sorry that your guinea pig is having this issue.

Unfortunately without seeing him it is hard for me to help you. Based on what you are describing however, it is possible that it is lice or mites. If it is one of those things then you would need to take him to your vet because the treatment for those is usually injections of a dewormer.

That being said, lice or mites does not usually make an animal listless or have the ocular discharge. It also does not usually cause them to stop eating. This is why I think it is important for you to get him to a vet for an examination.
