Question

How do I bleed my system after installing a new slave cylinder in my 1984 633 csi? I'm just beginning my learning curve on repairs. I installed the new slave cylinder but don't know, apparently, how to bleed the system now? I've got the air out, I think but the peddle won't come back fully. It has come back less than half way and that is as far as I have gotten.
Do I need a pressurized bleeding system and if so, where can I get one in Calgary, Alberta, Canada

I've just tried to install and bleed by holding the clutch in and letting the air out of the system through the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder

Answer

2 ways you can do this. Sounds like you have a ton of air in the sytem or the wrong part. When the master cyl fails you get the same thing going on (half pedal).

1. open the bleeder screw and alow gravity to bleed the system. After that is done for about 10 min or so. Grab a friend have them pump the pedal hold it down. Open and close the bleeder before they let go. Do this till the pedal comes back to normal.

2. Pressure bleeders are nice! you can find one from any of the major tool supply stores.

I don't beleive there is any air in the system as I have been doing essentially what you suggest but I have not had the peddle pumped but simply depressed and held. Should I have the clutch peddle pumped and then held or will that make any difference?

Answer

Basically there is a dead spot in the upper travel correct?

You need to try and pump the pedal then hold. What i have had to do is fill the reservoir to the top and pump rapidly about 100 times as fast as you can. this will force any air upwards. You should start to feel pressure after the 4th time bleeding if not then you may have a bad master cyl.
