Not an Employment Law Question?
Question
Hi, I work in NJ and was informed today that my employer will reduce my salary 25% starting Oct. 1. I have the same position and have worked for the same company for 4.5 years with no salary increases. I would like to know if this is legal and what my labor rights are. Thank you in advance for any help!

Answer
It is legal. It is being done prospectively and within employer discretion. It would only be illegal if you had a contract for a fixed amount for a fixed time, which most employees do not. Also, if you were being discriminated against because of race, gender or age it would also be invalid.
