Question

2000 Chevy Impala. When we get to about 30 mph a grinding noise from the front gets louder and it sounds like the transmission is not shifting but it is. While coasting in neutral the noise is still there. Any ideas on what it is?

Have you noticed it get louder or quieter when turning?

Reply

no because I normally don't turn while I am going that fast. Should I try it?

I'm not talking about doing a u-turn, just a large turn that will make the car lean a little like an off ramp or big curve.

When I road test, I just swerve left and right a little and the noise change would be very noticable.

Need to do a few things but will give it a try in couple of hours. OK?

OK, good advice, this is what I found, going straight it makes noise, going left it makes more noise and going right it doesn't make hardly any noise at all.

Accepted Answer

Good, it sounds like you have a bad right front wheel bearing. It is possible for a tire to do that also so I would have the tires rotated first to make sure the noise doesn't move with the tires buit if not, change the right front hub bearing.
