Question

July 9, digital readout on my '98 Cadillac indicated low coolant & engine overheating. Towed to Cadillac dealership.   Advised engine failure ~ $12,000 replacement. Suggested I donate to charity. Truth now is nothing wrong w/engine. Skeptical neighbor went to Cadillac, added coolant & digital readouts disappeared. Drove car home. Certified mechanic test showed engine OK. Returned in August & requested backup proof for their obvious erroneous diagnosis. Per Svs Mgr, was based on their knowledge that an overheated engine MIGHT fail in the future? Now 3 months later & over 1,000 miles it runs perfectly. Initially they suggested I donate car & later that I buy a smaller car like a Toyota (which I did w/a loan). What they did was unconscionable and morally and ethically wrong. I am 78, widowed, major heart trouble (just out of hospital due to heart failure-stress, on fixed income and paying for an unnecessary purchase because of their incompetence. How should they help me? Tks

Answer

They should not help you out. You got a second opinion and it turned out the car was fine. They were erring on the side of caution. In other words, if they added coolant, told you it would be okay, and to drive home then the engine failed, you would have complained that they should have told you that before. They were in a no-win situation so they were trying to be conservative. I don't blame them for that and neither would a court of law.

Good luck.
