Question

hi, my dog all of a sudden has what appears to be hives on his skin. Little bumps are all over his body & i'm not sure what's causing them -- whether they're due to some allergic reaction or insect bites. It's hard for me to take a good look at his skin because it's covered by his hair. He just keeps on licking it. My dog is almost 2yrs old and this is the 1st time he's had anything like this. He also hasn't eaten anything out of the norm yesterday. Is this something that I need to take my dog to a vet immediately?

Nothing yet, I was going to give him a bath in warm water to see if that helps soothe his skin.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that your dog is having this issue. It sounds as though he is having an allergic reaction. This can be from insect bites or stings, something ingestion, or something topical (walking through treated grass, flea preventative etc). I would suggest having him into the vet as these can progress quickly. When you call, inquire about using Benadryl. You can read more on this here: http://www.vetpets.net/animaltimes/humandrugs.html In some cases an oral steroid may also be needed. I hope he's doing better soon. -Robyn
