Question

T Plate Escort Finnesse 1.6i Zetec. Recently, when the car is started from cold, idles about 1500rpm before dropping to 1000 rpm.. Not the usual circa 875 rpm. Driving above 2000 rpm and depressing the clutch pedal the engine speed remains constant or increases, as though depressing the accelerator pedal further. However, once going (a couple of mins) if the engine speed is slowed to 2000 rpm or lower, when depressing the clutch pedal, the engine speed does decrease, as expected. Hence, when driving on motorways, etc, I have to reduce the engine speed by braking and reducing the engine speed under load to below 2000 rpm. However, once the engine is warm, I can often turn it off, restart and the engine idles at 875 rpm and is responsive to accelerator positions as would normally be the case. I suspect one of the many sensors is on the blink and perhaps its running on "limp mode". Any suggestions as to where the problem might rest?

Answer

Hello & Welcome to ja.com...

These models with the Zetec engine did have its fair share of troubles and in these areas too..

You dont mention of there is ever an engine managaement light on so I'll assume not.

The first thing to check is the PCV valve at the front of the engine and its associated piping.

From your description of the faults , I feel this is the most likley issue here... You need to purchase a new valve - and ideally the pipe that comes from it from Fords... they are cheap enough and once fitted I think you will find it will make the world of difference.

Worth just checking too - can you hear any air leaks ? Check underneath the coil pack, here is a rubber "T" piece that often splits and causes problems... a bit if a side issue on this one but worth a look.

Get the valve done as a first...

I Sincerely hope I have helped you -- Please ask if you need further help -

Kind Rgds, MIKE
