Answer

Hi & Welcome to ja.com...

First thing todo is have a good look and listen around the engine bay -- listening for any air leaks - induction air leaks - hissing., will cause such problems.

Look carefully at all the pipe work - especially the small bore pipes - inspect them for spilts/perishing and rectify any such problems....

If all that checks out -then the problem will be the IAC valve - the Idle Valve itself.

Sometimes these can be removed and cleaned with petrol - and this can work , so give that a try --

If that doesn't work , then renewal of the valve will be the answer to this one.

Thanks for your speedy answer. It sounds very technical. How can i identify the small bore pipes and is the idling valve visible or does a mechanic have to remove it. Your answer has not mentioned the distributor, does it mean the distributor may be ok?

Hi there again ;))

Its not difficult really honestly -- Basically EVERY small rubber pipe you see on and around the engine / engine bay - and the larger ones too - especially if you hear any hissing ( air leaks ) -deal with them.

As for the distributor -- no, there should be no trouble with that at all --- unless someone has had it out or moved it at all.

As for the Idle Valve -- If you look at the engine --- you will see the battery on the right -- just to the left of the battery - is a large trunking / air pipe -- Under that , attached to the engine is the Idle Valve...

It will be small - usually cyindrical and have maybe pipes and wires on it ( depending on variant ) -- I dont have a pic of this one at the moment -- if you really struggle I can find one for you to help you -- but it will be there.

If there are no air leaks etc --- and you have to buty a new IAC ( idle ) valve - you will be able to identify it from the new one you buy ;)

Thank you. I would appreciate the photos. Your answers are meticulous. I will sleep more relaxed. Any idea of the cost of the idle valve? What is the cululative effect of driving the vehicle for long distance at its present condition? Thanks again for your invaluable advice.

Answer

Hello Again....

I will have try and dig out a pic for you -- I have tried just now but not come up with it yet... I have a feeling that this one just may be a part of the throttle body - but I will double check for you - and get back to you tomorrow...

Cost would depend on whether you buy new or second hand - new I'm really not sure - but not cheap I wouldn't doubt -- if you give your Mazda dealer a ring they will tell you a price no trouble --

I would suggest however that you try clicking here ~ www.partsgateway.co.uk      for a good second hand one.    What you do here , is enter your details on the system - and then suppliers will come back to you / contact you and and supply you with a good second hand one - probably for around the 40£ mark I would think.    That's certainly what I would do if it comes to needing one.

There is no problem with driving it like that - it wont cause any problems other that fuel consumption and irritating for you as the driver ;-/

I hope this helps you sleep good --   AND   Thank you for the Accept - and I would also like to point out - that you have had the dubious honour of giving me my 1000 th ACCEPT !        Thank You !

Kind Rgds to you ,    MIke

Thanks man for your advice. Through your advice, i made an amazing discovery this morning. i have attached 4 photos for the benefit of others who may face a similar predicament. The air filter cover has an attached gadget which is electronically controlled. If i disconnect the gadget from power supply(with orange face on photo), the idling stablelise at around 900rpm with very slight variation and minimal engine vibration. I observed this for around 10 minutes. When i reconnect the power supply, the effect of wobbly idling is immediate, the idling is terrible and engine vibration is visible.
Food for thought:
What is the name of what i have described, could it be housing the IAC valve? What is the effect of leaving the gadget disconnected while driving? Does it mean that i have to buy the whole rubber thing from the air filter cover to where it connects to the engine for optimum engine efficiency.
The car has done 59500 miles
Please refer to the photos for more clarity.
Thanks for your invaluable advice, you are amazing!

Thanks,
