Question

I'm not sure when it came on (last couple of days) but the orange 'engine' warning light wont go off.( it's an orange engine-shaped icon) Manual says 'emission control problems' - or maybe 'service due warning'. The mileage is 76k odd miles....call Suzuki etc.....
Recent MOT emission test was fine ( 3months back).
No apparent loss of power etc, no apparent leaks, all fluid levels within correct ranges according to marks, no strange noises....car is running fine.
If i wasn't struggling for cash right now I'd get a service - it has been 20kodd miles since the last one - a bronze service at 56k odd miles.
My guess is that its just a service due warning light.....that everything is fine..As I mentioned money is tight right now - and as i cant get a service right now - i'd be happy just to ''reset'' this warning light - so that it will still light should there ever be another service due/or develop emission problems.
Your thoughts please?
and maybe how to reset the light?
thanks
danny

Answer

Hello there & Welcome to ja.com!

As your engine management light is coming on - this is indicating that the cars computer (ecu) has logged faults in the engine management systems - What needs to be done now is to have those faults read from the ecu - which will point to the area of the fault that is causing problems...

It is not a service - due light -- it is a fault light.

You need to have the car put on a diagnostic computer - have a look in your local yellow pages - or similar, for a garage or a mobile diagnostician - that has the suitable equipment to do this for you - many have - it doesn't have to be a dealer - and this will likely be much cheaper for you ;)

This could really be anything from a simple sensor fault to the main ECU having gone faulty -- any other way than the above would be pure guesswork which you just can't do these days - and its a very expensive method!

The connection to a diagnostic computer is the only way forward for you to effect a sure cure ;)

As a basic DIY thing -- all you can really do - and it may be worth it - is check around every wire connector you can find in the engine bay - and give it a wiggle and a slight tug --- just to see if its something really silly , like a bad connection that you could cure yourself... Very often though - even when the fault that put the light on is cured, very often the car needs teh diagnostic computer to re set the ECU - and switch the light off... but as I say... it may be worth a try.

Sometimes too -- people have success , disconnecting the cars battery for half an hour , which sometimes has the effect of re setting the ecu fault memory and canceling the light.... These thoughts are very much DIY - but if none of it works - then its the computer job Im afraid..

Bear in mind that if you do disconnect the battery , you will lose all settings like , radio, telephone etc etc.... and this would all need re setting again...

Kind Rgds, MIKE
