Question

I have a 15 year old female cat. The 6 months (twice)- she has blood in her urine, we treat it, but now she appears to have becme incontinent. I know she is getting old and this might be a part of aging, but when is enough -enough.

Info Request

Hi Kimberly,
In what way is she incontinent? Is she leaking urine while she sleeps, or is she leaking urine out of her as she walks along..and it just drips out onto the floor?
Does she show an increased level of thirst?

Is there still blood visible in this leaked urine?
Has the vet recently done a blood and urine laboratory testing work-up on her? If so, what were the results? Did she show postive results of a urinary tract infection...or just some blood in the urine, with no sign of infection?

No blood in the urine as it leaks at this time...The last time she went to the vet - he looked at her urine - it showed a lot of sugar.. not sure what that means...Since the vet office scares the cat to death...I've choosen not to take her anymore - she's on hospice, but not sure if this is something that can be treated with meds. I do not want to give her a shot everyday - she's old! not sure what to do.

Accepted Answer

It sounds like your kitty may be a diabetic. If she had alot of sugar in her urine, is drinking excessively, and has twice had blood in her urine (often a sign of urinary tract infections, which are very common in diabetics), then this is likely the reason for her incontinence. She really needs to have some blood and urine tests done to determine just how bad her diabetes is, and whether or not it can be easily treated. Not all diabetic cats need to be on insulin injections. Some are well-maintained on a change of diet alone, or sometimes also with the help of an oral medication called glipizide.

If your kitty gets frighetened of going in to the animal hospital, then you may want to consider having a housecall veterinarian come to you. Many cats are much more comfortable this way, and the whole experience will go better for the both of you. Then you can get this problem diagnosed, and hopefully get her started on some treatment to stop these symptoms.

I hope that this information is of help to you, and I wish you the best of luck with your kitty. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
