Question

I am hearing a clunking sound and feeling it as well when I turn the wheel in my 2005 Impala. I have heard that there is a common problem with the steering column/shaft. Should there not be a recall for this since it is apparently a common problem? This started at around 50000Km.

Hello, and thank you for choosing Just Answer!

Yes, there are a couple of different TSB about this problem. It has not been made into a recall yet, because for some reason, it has not been deemed as a 'dangerous problem'

Anyways, here is a copy of the TSB's that will apply to the problem you are having, and the procedures the technician is supposed to follow while diagnosing and repairing it.

I am going to have to contact GM as I have now been charged in excess of $600 to repair this problem, which it seems to me is a common occurance and I should not have to pay for this defect from the manufacturer. Until I hear back from them, I am not certain your answer was helpful. I had significant safety concerns and wanted an answer which would tell me whom to contact so that GM could step up and admit their mistake rather than force me to pay for their mistake.

Answer

OK... There is a difference between Technical Service Bulletins, and Factory Recalls.

Service bulletins are only notes for the technician to follow while diagnosing and performing the repair. Factory Recalls are the free ones.

Now, you say my answer was 'not helpful', because you had to pay for the repair???

If you wanted contact information for someone at GM, you should have asked for that. But if I give it to you, it probably won't be very helpful either.

Thank you for choosing Just Answer, and good luck with your car.
