Question

I live in Kentucky. I have a bench warrant for failure to appear for a speeding ticket two years ago. I also have an unresolved ticket in Ohio, and a fine for littering in a public waterway over five yaers ago. I now have the means to pay these fines. I don't want to get arrested when I walk into the courthouse to settle the bill. Is this a real possibility, or should I just go in and redocket the case?

Answer

If you redocket the case, you run the same risk of being arrested when you walk into the courthouse.

In my experience, bench warrants for failure to appear are usually settled without arrest, but I understand that you don't want to take any chances.

You should call your circuit court clerk and explain your situation to her. It is possible that you can just mail in your payment to these fines and take care of it that way. If she is uncertain about the bench warrant, you should call the clerk of the judge who issued it and speak to him or her about how best to resolve it.

Between talking to those two people in your jurisdiction, I am confident that you can resolve these issues. Let me know if you need help locating phone numbers or any further assistance.
