Question

Forgery and fraud has been committed against my husband, who is now in Federal custody and will not be paroled for 15 years. We know of the certain individual that has committed these crimes. I wanted to know, should I go to the police OR seek out an attorney OR both? These crimes just recently occured, since my husband was arrested on April 24, 2008. His income tax checks have been forged and cashed, titles to vehicles have been forged, a "Power of Attorney" has been forged w/his name & dated AFTER his arrest. This person is a felon, & I have a document stating this person bought a pistol a day before being sentenced to probation, for recieving a stolen firearm. PLEASE, CAN YOU HELP ME?

I just came across all these documents. I have notified my husband and he wants me to pursue this IMMEDIATELY! But, I'am not sure on how to go about reporting these crimes. I've contacted the IRS, on the income tax checks.

Answer

hi

the best thing to do is begin with the police - these are identity theft crimes, as well as forgery. get the police to file a criminal report. if they do not take it seriously for some reason, then you should contact the district attorney, make an appointment and bring them the information, as well as a copy of the police report so they can begin working on it. if the DA does not act, then you would need to consult with a local lawyer who can assist in getting one of those agencies to pay attention and do something.
