Question

UK-Tech correctly identified that the button on the parcel compartment wasn't depressed, preventing the convertible top on my Mini Cooper from opening. Once I fixed that, it started to open, but now is hung up just past the passenger seat. It makes a loud buzzing noise directly above my head when I try to either open or close it. It's now stuck in that one position. What can I do further?

Answer

Hello, check your owners maual. It sounds like the motor is dissengauged. Most convertable tops have a release lever of sorts. If you messed with the micro switch you may have enabled one motor and not the other. I would imagine you possibly put it in default. Or it already was. You need to perfom emergency closure "in manual" and then re-engauge motors. -I would then perform battery re-set and top initialisation. Usualy by holding button down. -- If that does not work. check the hydraulic fluid level. And put the switch back how it was.

Answer

I'm sorry but the above answer is incorrect. The microswitch that the parcel shelf sits on tells the car that there is nothing big enough in the boot to inhibit its operation.

What you need to do now is........

Inside the boot on the left hand side is a cover, remove this. Behind it you will see the valve block for the pump. Facing you on this valve block is a small allen key screw. Backing this screw off a couple of turns will release the pressure in the hood and you will be able to move it manually. Beware- if you are not confident with what you are doing do not attempt to carry out any repairs on your hood, it could literally cost you thousands.

I realized from my reading that the other answer was wrong.
I'm hesitant to try to close this by myself. Can you tell me if it is covered under warranty if I take it to my local machanic? I'm about 3 hours from the nearest dealer.
Thanks.

Accepted Answer

I would strongly advise that you take it to at least a specialist, someone who is familiar with how they work. But i'm afraid your warranty will only cover you at a BMW franchise as far i know. We're seeing Mini roof failures all the time now and it's quite an expensive affair when they do go wrong. Chances are good that if you did get to your dealer and the roof was found to be faulty they would apply for a goodwill claim as your vehicle is only just out of warranty.

From what you describe it does sound like a pressure build up in the valve block that is blocking the operation, which is a common occurrence. Have you managed to get it moving? If not then try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes and retrying.

If the roof begins to move in a non uniform manner cease operation, bending the roof mechanism is generally terminal.

Thanks so much, Rich. I just got off the phone with the nearest BMW dealership in KC--they told me that BMW Roadside Assistance will pick up my car and take it to the dealership. I'm going to do that. My Daddy was a great mechanic, but I don't have a clue about valve blocks, etc. and am afraid I'd really mess something up.

I'll miss my Mini while it's at the doctor but I'll just have to drive my husband big BMW. I'm sure he'll be thrilled. Thanks again for your fast help--

Answer

Hello, I do not feel my answer was incorrect. I misunderstood your statement about the switch. I did see that there was a release procedure. I also see the recommendation of the battery re-set. Both of which I suggested.
