Question
I have a Starcraft 2350, model year 2002, that starts with no problem but tends to shut off (with attending loud beep-beep signal) when accelerating or sometimes after broadsiding the wake of a boat that just passed. It always restarts immediately, and then often repeats itself...but not always. This very, very rarely occurs when moving slowly. What could it be?

Hello.. What brand and horsepower engine?

Mercruiser, 8 cylinder engine, I think about 265 HP. I should have mentioned that I've always had problems putting fuel in the tank. I can only put fuel in very slowly. Could this be a tank vent problem?

Answer
Hello.. From what you are describing you are loosing connection from battery to the ignition. This could be a bad, corroded or loose terminals at the kill switch, key switch, under dash connection or where wiring harness plugs into engine. When you can access boat, turn key on and start wiggling wires and connectors under dash. Then check kill switch and then engine connections. If guages flutter or alarm beeps you have found source area and need to narrow it down.

Thank you. This may be it, but I had the Marina (DeFeo) in Greenwood Lake, NY take the whole thing apart (at their expense; they sold me the boat, used) a couple of years ago looking for this. Whatever they did, things seemed fine for a couple of days and then it returned. Riding into wakes would certainly seem to point to something of this nature. There is no real predictability to it. Do you think a clogged tank vent could have anything at all to do with the boat's stalling at high speeds on mirror smooth (early morning) lake water?

Hello. A clogged vent will act up no matter what the water conditions. If you are having trouble fueling boat ,I would check for clogged or kinked fuel vent. Also some boats will just not take fuel fast because of the way fuel lines ar routed. If vent is not clogged have someone run engine while you check carb. When engine starts to stall, pull choke flap slowy closed. If it picks back up, carb has debris and needs rebuild. Also check filter in carb for trash.

Hello again, and thank you for the info. One more question.... I ran this boat on Greenwood Lake in NY.
Parts of tahe lake are unfortunately shallow and heavily weeded in the summer months. Could a partially clogged water intake port possibly cause a stall/shutdown condition with the attending electronic double beep as a consequence of overheating when running the boat at higher speeds? I realize, of course, that this probably has little to do with shutdowns caused by riding through a passing boats large wake on occasion (mentioned above). And how would somebody clean out any possible debris?
Thank you again!

Answer
Hello.. Its pretty hard to get weeds inside of water pickup. If you ran thru weeds you would see a loss of speed, the engine struggling and the engine temp would go up due to water starvation. If this was done numerous times the impeller would start to be damaged. This would result in higher engine temps which you not indicated. If it sould get hot enough to set off alarm, you would see it on the guage.

Sounds like water pickup is not the issue from what you are saying.
Could a clogged tank vent cause my problem under any circumstances, or is it just basically an annoyance that I could get away with leaving the vent (or lack of one) as is?
Accepted Answer
Hello.. If it shuts off suddenly ,it is a electrical issue. If it shut off due to lack of fuel, it would be hard to restart. You say it restarts instantly after shut off, I doubt it is fuel or vent related. The way I would test this if in my shop would be to apply 12volt to purple wire at coil and test run. If it shut down it is in the ignition system or engine grounds ( ignition module, manifold, distributer not grounded). If it ran fine go to engine side of harness and splice in. If fine got to boat side of harness. I would keep working my way back to dash and key. Do this with key off as you will be sending the power thru purple to ignition.
