Optional Information

1990 Lincoln Continental 3.8I

Already Tried:
I have changed the map sensor and the throttle positon sensor. I then got an up graded obd scanner and found that it was not te tps but low voltage to it. I am wondering if the mass air flow sensor could cause this or what other things could cause this problem of the engine just surging from from idle to about half throttle just setting there, or just idling to high in park. Thanks Don

Thanks for asking Just Answer. This vehicle has either a MAP sensor or a MAF sensor,it won`t have both. The MAP has a vacuum line going to it.The MAF would be connected between the air cleaner and the throttle body.Without knowing what the voltage at the TPS sensor is,it is hard to say if this is the problem.Let me know if you can give any more info or have other questions.

Well this car does have a map sensor and I have taken the vaccum line off and the engine idles down. I go to put the line back on the sensor and the engine revs up. I ran the code scanner and it gave me a falt code of 63 which is low voltage to throttle position sensor. I do not know the exact reading yet. I need to check that. I can unhook the sensor that sets on top of the throttle body, that has a hole one on either side of throttle plate, and then take car down the road and while it still idles to high it does not jerk at highway speeds. I will try to get a voltage reading on the TPS in the morning. Thanks XXXXXXXXX

Did you get the voltage readings from the TP sensor. With the sensor connected there should be around 5 volts on one wire, then check between the other 2 wires. With the throttle closed there should be around 0.9 volts and should increase to about 4.5 volts as you open the throttle.Let me know what you have.

I got the voltages and with the TP sensor connected bottom wire is 5.10 volts, middle wire is .85 with throttle closed, and 4.45 with throttle open top wire stays at .03 volts all the time. But as I was working on car I just decided to close off the throttle body with a plate and see if engine would still run, and it does with air intake completely closed off engine idles down and runs pretty good. I sprayed carb cleaner around intake and engine cuts out and trys to die. So I think it has vaccum leak too. Any help you could give me would be appreicated. I am going to also hit the accept button for all you have done to help me. I still dont know which sensor is bad. XXXXXXXXX
