Answer

Hi Kenneth

A dog will still be fertile at 9 years old. However, if he's not already sired pups, you won't know if he's fertile at all but there's no reason why you can't give it a shot.

If he's a bit sore in the hips, it may make it a bit uncomfortable to mount a bitch, but I don't think that'll deter him from a receptive lady! If he does find it too sore to mate naturally, you can speak to your vet about pain relief if necessary, and there's always the option of artificial insemination.

All the best

Will it matter if the female is taller than him and she may not be real receptive its her first breeding

Accepted Answer

He should still manage, there's been lots of cases of small males successfully mating with bigger females.

If it's her first breeding, I'd suggest you perhaps get an experienced breeder along to just keep an eye on things, or to help out if necessary. If she is a little nervous or unsure, or isn't quite ready to breed, she may injure your boy.
