Question

Every time I take my car into get an oil change, it seems that I leave paying $600-$800 for a bunch of other things that "they find wrong" with the car. I am not a mechanic, so I don't understand most of what they are talking about, but I constantly feel like I am getting screwed. What regualar maintenance REALLY needs to be done with a car and what can be put aside? Is it really important to do the 30K mile and the 60K mile servicing? That is around $500 a pop. I just can't believe that someone out there who makes way less than I do is able to afford to do all this on thier salary. Am I a sucker or am I just being too skeptical? Thank you for the response.

2005 Chevrolet Tahoe

Already Tried:
There has been a big deal recently made about the expiration date on tires. Is this something I should be concerned about? Should I make sure I have NEW tires on my car when I get them changed? How often do I need to change them?

2005 Chevy Tahoe Z71

65,000 miles

Answer

Thank you.

Here is wha you should have done at about 60,000 miles.
  1. Air cleaner filter
  2. Auto. Trans. Fluid
  3. Transfer case fluid
  4. Change the engine oil and filter
  5. Rotate the tires. Inspect the tire inflation pressures and the tire wear
  6. Inspect brakes and rotors.
That is what the manufacturer suggest at that mileage. Now if you choose to do that or not is up to you. I don't see a reason why you are paying $500-$600. I would ask for a detailed work order to find out what all they are doing to the car. You are paying for it, so you have the right to now what is being done.
