Question
A question concerning my cat, she approaching 18 years old, a few months ago I had to change my living condition and move from a house to an apartment and having trouble getting her to use the litter box. I've tried 2 boxes in different rooms, still the same. I've notice when I schedule her yearly visit to the vet, that she is definately losing weight. After visiting the Vet, all of her test came back ok, but her kidney levels were not good. I notice over the past month that she is throwing up more and more. A little food, but seems to be hair mostly. This morning she throw and dierrea. She's currently on the KD Dry food from the Vet. After she gets sick she sits on the coach or jumps up on the bed as normal. I'm very concerned, she been my buddy for 18 years. I've also noticed that she's been walking around crying or seems like screaming more and more. I wish I could speak cat! Sorry to go on and on, just very concerned. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you, Larry

Hi Larry
When you had your cat tested, did your vet check her thyroid hormone levels?

Yes they check that, it was fine. The Kidney Levels were off.
Answer
Hi Larry Your cat's symptoms are still very typical of hyperthyroidism, and she's of an appropriate age for this condition.

Sometimes cats with hyperthyroidism can have normal blood test results. I think it's worth chatting to your vet again about this, perhaps repeat the blood test and possibly even a trial of medication for this condition. Kidney disease can also cause vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and poor coat condition, as well as ulcers in the mouth. You're doing the right thing with your diet, but cats with kidney disease may also benefit from anabolic steroids, and vitamins, particularly B vitamins. Again, speak to your vet as he's the one who has examined your cat. Thirdly, cats being very territorial beings, can become quite upset by a change in environment, leading to behavioral changes such as vocalisation and inappropriate urination. Feliway is a pheromone which can relax cats in a new environment, you can read more about it here:

I think it's worth getting in touch with your vet again, he's done the right thing with the tests and the diet, and further investigate the thyroid issue and whether or not the Feliway may help. All the best with your elderly lady. I'm sure you and your vet can work together to get on top of these annoying symptoms. Rosie
