Question

hello my name is Marilyn. and i was just wondering about an EMG that i had. when i had this done my good leg jumped all over the place and my bad leg just laid there. this worries me. Is this normal? I have written in before and the possibility of nerver damage to the ankle. now it has been almost two years since i have reconstructive surgery on the right ankle and i am still in pain and i have been told that there is nothing more they can do for me now the pain is getting to my upper and lower back and the tail bone. I am in so much pain all the time. I just found out that i have bulging disks in my middle back and in the neck id like to know if there is anything that can be done about this.... i would love to live a normal life without pain.

Info Request

HI,

Why was the surgery done on the ankle? What surgery?

Do you have pain radiating down your leg?

Is there any muscle weakness in your bad leg? Do you have pain on the same leg?

Im still online to answer your queries after you send me this info.

yes i have pain in the ankle. I broke my ankle over 2 years ago. i do have weakness as well. The ankle keeps giving out.i get shooting pain from the ankle up the calf of that leg. the surgery was done to the fact that there was no blood getting to the bone that i broke. they took a part of that bone out, and i have a plate and screws.the ankle at times also has a burning sensation . I cant even stratch that leg without getting a bad crap in it.... if you need further info i can tell you. i forgot the name of the surgery thet was done. sorry. i am scared that i will never be the same as before the accident.

Answer

Hi, the pain in your ankle can be due to the plate and screw incorporated there.Pain can also be due to reduced blood supply to the bone or muscles which will be indicated by reduced pulsation in the arteries of the foot or pale skin color.

The disc lesion can give rise to both pain in the back radiating down the leg and muscle weakness . Since you have already been on pain medications, you can also take lumbar epidural injections of steroids for pain relief. This procedure is simple and is usually helpful for patients with chronic low back pain and pain in the legs. The effects of a successful injection can last anything from a few weeks to several months.

But if you still continue to have pain even thereafter, you may need surgical treatment for the disc lesions.

Hi, sorry for the delay in answering as I was offline.

No, it is not normal for the bad leg to lie without any movement. Normally, muscles show no activity when the EMG records the muscle activity at rest. But in case of muscle injury or primary nerve injury (which can be present in your case), abnormal muscle activity will be recorded during rest.

During activity, a normal muscle will record a positive response during the EMG test but an injured muscle or nerve will not show appropriate response.

You can read this up this site.
