Question

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

I was using my friends Waverunner III 650 yesterday and it starts briefly and then shuts down. It almost seems like it shuts off automatically? There is fuel and oil. I checked fuel flow, spark, etc. All seems in order. When it dies it seems that you have to remove and reinstall lanyard to get it to fire again?

It was running fine until two things happened. First it got flipped upside down. There was no water in hull, but we had trouble starting it after that. We got it started by playing with the stop switch, so we thought the switches got wet when it was flipped? It ran fine after that for an hour until the oil ran out. We refilled oil and had trouble starting it, but then it ran fine for 30 minutes after that, so I thought we just needed to get the oil primmed?

Now it is doing the latest thing where it cuts off immediately. The only thing I see is the oil resevoir has a slightly cracked cap and I can not cinch it real tight without threads slipping?

Any advice would be gratly appreciated. Jeff

Info Request

Hi ninjaOOO,
I suggest doing a compression test. The symptoms that you have described so far don't add up for me. Let me know what the compression is and we can take it from there.
Thanks

Hello,

Thanks for your response. Why do you think it would be compression? It does start briefly and has good power for the couple seconds before it dies suddenly. It almost seems like something is telling the Waverunner to stop running and cutting it off. Is there a sensor maybe being triggered for some reason designesd to kill it, like a sensor if oil is not flowing?

I would think with poor compression it would just run poorly with little power or not start at all. This waverunner will start strong and just cut off suddenly anywhere from 1-3 seconds. If I try to restart it, it will not fire, unless I remove and replace the lanyard, so I was thinking it is resetting the electronics somehow to allow it to fire again? Does that make any sense? I am unable to check compression right now as the jet ski is 60 miles away right now at the lake we use it at.

Jeff

Answer

Because of the sudden stoppage, the oil problem, and it is the very first diagnostic test for any running issues no matter what the symptoms are. Just answer back with the compression readings when you get them, I will get a message saying you have added new info and will respond then.
Thanks
