Question

our car recently caught fire and the fire brigade suspects it may have been an electrical fault, if this is true, the insurance co may not pay out under our third party fire and theft policy!!! surely a fire is a fire regardless of the cause! but apparently it is highlighted in the 'small print' which we never saw, should we have requested a copy of the terms or should they have automatically been posted out to us?

but why wouldnt it be covered if it was electrical? and can they really tell that it was electrical and will they have to prove exactly what caused it, there is very little left of the car, it burned for about an hour before the fire brigade were called and were able to put it out!!!

Answer

Hello if they have a clause in the contract that says that wont cover an electrical fire then they dont have to pay the claim. You can have the car checked by an inspector to find out what happened and caused the fire. The insurance company would have there own people check it and determine what the cause of the fire was.
