Question

My wife and I are retired. I recently receied notification that we are not eligible for the governments stimulus package due to the fact that we did not have a total of $3,000 or more in qualifying income. I am quite confused as our total income (from a pension and social security) was$12,000. We filed on a 1040 form and we just cannot make any sense with this. I hope you can shed some light on what has happened? What is "qualifying income". Thank you.

Answer

Dear Qalityplus,

Thank you for your question.

Qualifying income includes Social Security benefits, certain Railroad Retirement benefits, certain veterans' benefits and earned income, such as income from wages, salaries, tips and self-employment. For people filing joint tax returns, only a total of $3,000 of qualifying income from both spouses is required to be eligible for a payment.

However Supplemental social Secuuirty income does not qualify.

There may have been an error in processing your return.

You can use the following calculator to double check:

If when you use the calculator you still feel youi were due a stimulous package, then there may have been an error. You would have to contact the IRS hot line for he economic simulous pacakge. 1-866-234-2942

Select prompt that will take you to the live person.

It may be more beneficail to go to a tax assistance center near you:

These centers offer free assistance in issues such as the rebate checks.
