Info Request

Hi there.

I have a few questions for you first so that I may better answer your question.

1) What is happening to your hair that you are interested in using the zinc for?

2) Have you used zinc in the past?

3) Do you have any allergies to medications?

4) Do you have any chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, etc?

5) Any additional information about your hair or scalp that you could provide would be helpful.

I look forward to your response. I am sending this as an info request so that you can view and answer back without paying. You only pay for answers.

Thank you.

Answer

Thanks for your reply.

There are several different types of zinc shampoos with varying concentrations of zinc. It sounds like you had a 2.5 % zinc shampoo in the past. The ingredient you are looking for is zinc pyrithione.

One common zinc shampoo is DHS zinc shampoo which contains 2% pyrithione zinc. This shampoo is often used for itchy skin. Another common zinc product is the ZNP bar. This also contains 2% zinc pyrithione. You can also talk to your pharmacist about a custom made shampoo. You can read more about these here: http://www.dermadoctor.com/product.asp?productid=96&WID=%7B387826B3%2D8CA5%2D4CAC%2D992D%2D47D97A150FBC%7D

As for the oral zinc, zinc picolinate or zinc citrate are the two most well absorbed forms. Common doses are 25-50mg per day. It should be taken with food as it may cause some digestive dicomfort. In addition, long term use of zinc can lead t copper deficiency. To prevent this, 2-4mg of copper should be used when using greater than 30mg of zinc per day.

It is important to discuss treatments with your doctor before beginning. If you experience, rash, increased redness or itching, tongue or throat swelling/itching, or hives, call your doctor immediately.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
