gas smell that's maybe not gas, but unlivable

Please help me! My kids and I just moved across the country. Now that we're in our rental house, the place always wreaks of gas! A heavy smell that I can't take. The gas company came out & found no gas leaks, but said the smell was bad, told us to get a plumber to check for mercury. Any ideas? Please help us. Let us know if we need to get out of here. We hate to have to move again, but I worry for our health.
