Question

My Shar-Pei dog is 2 years old and has started loosing hair on the lower half of her back. It isnt bald, but there is ALOT of hair loss. There are scabs, and she is starting to loose it on her tail also. I looked at her rear end today and she has chewed so hard that it has bled. Im unsure that its fleas, because i have looked and there is none that i can see. Im worried that it could be mange. Am i correct? Its inflamed and sore, and and it annoys her alot.

Thanks for the question Jess.

While I cannot diagnose this over the internet one of the main conditions this could be is an allergic dermatitis. Sometimes dogs develop a sensitivity to a small protein in the saliva of the flea and this causes skin lesions in the area you mention. It does not matter where the dog is bitten by the flea, the rash will still appear in the same place at the back and the base of the tail. Where a dog is sensitive only a very small number of fleas would be required for full blown symptoms to develop.

This condition is very easily treated by your vet who will if appropriate use anti-allergy drugs plus antibiotics. If it turns that out it is flea bite dermatitis then you need to be meticulous with your flea control not only on the dog but in the house as well.

If I can advise you further please get back in touch.
