Answer

Hi XXXXX,
I would start by getting some WD40 and spraying the whole engine, all the electrical connectors are male/femle bullets which you are able to pull apart, pull them apart and spray off, if need be give them a clean using either sandpaper or a small wire brush, if the connectors have gone green this is a must, find the stop switch and trace the wires back o a connector and try for a spark while disconnected, you may need to remove the flywheel (not easy without puller and torque wrench) to clean the coils and magnets as the airgap between them may not be there now due to build up of ferrous materials(rust).
If non of this gets the spark back you may need to take the engine to a specialist who will be able to diagnose the exact fault.

thanks for your answer. I have already sprayed everything down with wd and done some testing on the kill switch. I found that it had continuity to gnd. So i disconnected the coil wir from the switch and it works fine. Then checked continuity there and found continuity to ground on that wire. then disconnected wires at coil and found wire going to condenser had continuity to ground. is this normal?                      ps Iam a certified mechanic and do understand more than someone without my background. Iwork on diesel engines not automotive so much so a spark controlled engine is not really my thing.

Hi XXXXX
Thats handy to know about mechanical knowledge it make life a little easier,
Can you confirm this is cdi or points ignition, just want to make sure we are on the same engine (yr wise they differ on ignition)

I see what looks like a points assembly under rubber cap over cam gear. But I am not familiar with a cdi system. Could Ihave more info to help me identify a cdi system please.

Answer

Cdi ignition has wires that come from under the flywheel into a box and back out of the box to the coils whereas points have wires straight to the coil from under the flywheel.
You mentioned a condensor where was this under the flywheel? The points if it is point system is under the main flywheel if this has been out in the weather chances are the points have "rusted" shut so will need cleaning, failing this if its cdi you will need to ascertain you have voltage coming off the wires out from under the flywheel, if you have voltage from there but nothing out of the cdi box to the coil then the cdi is gone.
If you have any pics of the motor with hood off this will help identify it.

Ihave emailed some pictures of my engine. Ibelieve it is a cdi ignition. The only thing I am unsure about is that from what i can see there are wires that come out from under flywheel and go to box but there is also a wire that comes out from under flywheel that goes directly to the coil. From the coil one wire also goes to cam area where it looks like there are points. the emailed pictures should show this better. If you need more pictures let me know. thanks again for all your trouble.

Hi orcamarine.as you may have realized already the internet is also not my best thing . I hopr these pictures will help. Ihave also did some more testing and found that there is power to my coil but nothing coming out if it. Ihtink it is probabaly my coil that is shot. Any idea what a new one costs?

Accepted Answer

Hi XXXXX,
I am uk based and prices over here are completely different to US prices, my parts list does not show up the coil so is not available here, you may possibly need to locate a 2nd hand unit, I would expect a new unit to cost about $100 as the equivelant coil would cost about £100, 2nd hand anything from $20 and up.
Hope my info has helped a little.
Many Thanks Orcamarine
