I have 1974 65 hp mercury motor that sparks sometimes and next time no spark. Motor runs good when we have spark. I would appreciate any help. Thank You, Buzzy

Hi Ralphy,
I would check all the wiring, due to the age of this engine the casing on the wires could be perished and touching the chassis of the engine or control box making a circuit and switching the spark off.Also check the mercury tilt switch as these can be a headache.Your switch could have an intemittant fault also.

Thanks for your help. Could it be the distributor trigger? We can move the distributor cap when we have no fire and then it fires. But, this time we moved the cap and no spark. We have taken it out twice and runs fine. But if it sits then we have no spark. Thank you, Buzzy

Hi Buzzy, If you move the distributor and the spark comes back then it would seem like a loose connection or bad wiring, also worth bearing in mind the battery has to be in very good order as this engine relies quite heavily on it.
