Rich, thanks a million. The serpentine belt shreaded on my 740 and I noticed it pushed the A/C belt back away from the center of the pulleys. Do you know where that tension release would be for that belt? I bought a new belt just in case.

The car is several miles from here so it is difficult to visualize until I get back over there. It is hard to get under the car where it is parked, so if you know exactly where the radiator drain plug is it would be helpful since I guess I will have to remove some of the underbody protection.

Answer

Hi Bob,

the links to the repair instructions you require are at the bottom of the repair instructions in the link above for draining the coolant. But it is not entirely necessary to do this.

The tensioner for the air-con belt will be clearly visible once the undertray has been removed. It has a sprung tensioner lower and between the pump and crank pulleys.

Rich, I received your email after spending all afternoon working on the car away from home. I got the coolant drained, AC belt repositioned, fan shroud removed along with half the front of the engine and finally the water pump is out.

The only real dilemma is that when I removed the water pump along came the (2) two foot long aluminum coolant tubes that run underneath the intake manifold. My hand will not reach to the back but it looks as if the o rings or seals have partially deteriorated which opens up the good possibility for a leak if I can't get them cleaned out or sealed. It appears I am not the first to pull these tubes out, as there was blue sealant of some kind on both ends of the tubes and on many other coolant parts I removed. What do you recommend I do to seal these inaccessible tube ends? I am making you work for this $20, yes?

Obviously, the second time would be 5 times easier, but the only critical mistake I have made so far is the tubes. How is one to know without a step by step pictorial of what to do and not to do?

Answer

Hi Bob

the repair instructions or that website are direct from the dealer network.

It's vitally important that the seals on tubes are replaced, they will leak if you use the old ones. Try to reach them with a long screw driver or pick or anything just to get them out. If you cannot relocate them then you'll have to remove the inlet manifold which is going to open up a whole new world of pain. Replace the seals, clean up the surfaces they locate into best you can and use plenty of silicon spray or lube to get them back in. A small amount of instant gasket will help to seal.

I think the part numbers you need for the seals are on the link.

Other than that I dont know how much more I can help you. I have to say it can be a struggle to get the pipes back in but it is possible, but failing this you'll have to remove the intake manifold meaning replacing all those gaskets too.

Best of luck.

Rich.
