Question
I have been told me that on the Subaru Impreza the oil drain plug crush gasket needs to be replaced with every oil change and that when properly tightened acts similarly to a lock washer. He stated further that the oil drain plug crush casket is only effective as a Lock washer" one time and if not replaced becomes ineffective and the oil drain plug can loosen and fall out. Is this correct?

In a perfect text book correct world yes all of this is correct. But in the real world these are rarely replaced, and do not have a problem if they are reused. The drain doesn't have a problem with vibrating loose if tightened properly. This practice is mostly to help sell parts and not because it is necessary. I didn't word my question very well. The oil drain plug actually fell out of my daughter's Subaru Impreza causing extensive engine damage. The receipt from the place that did the oil change does not show that the crush gasket was replaced. We were told by the service rep at the dealership where the engine was repaired that the oil drain plug crush gasket needs to be replaced with every oil change and that when properly tightened cannot back out, that it is only effective one time, and if not changed can loosen and fall out. In this case the drain plug fell out after nearly 5,000 miles, but according to another source that should not matter.
Accepted Answer
The crush gasket not being replaced would not cause the drain plug to fall out. Bottom line is if the drain plug fell out even after 5,000 miles it was not properly tightened when it was last installed. Whoever installed the drain plug should be liable for any damages. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.
