Question

Coco is approx 17, suddenly she has started peeing outside litter box. I have a towel under the box which is soaked three times a day. She also pees on the bathroom floor. Our guest bedroom and bathroom are beginning to smell awful. Do you have any suggestions as to why this is suddenly happening?

Info Request

When a cat starts to suddenly have inappropriate eliminations it can be several different things.

Has there been any changes in her environment lately?

Any new animals introduced to the house?

Is she straining to urinate?

Is the urine particularly foul smelling or does it smell like normal cat urine?

No changes in environment, no new animals, dont see her pee so cant say if she strains, normal cat urine.

Accepted Answer

Since there have not been any changes in her environment and day to day life then the next step I'd take is to see if something health wise has happened

I'd go to the vet to have a full examination; blood work and urinalysis and possibly a chest and abdominal x ray. This will tell you if she has developed any underlying diseases you are not aware of such as kidney, heart, liver or cancer issues.

If she comes back with a clean bill of health then it is time to check out behavioral issues.

Here are two links to some great websites that can have good tips to behavioral type inappropriate elimination problems.
