Question

My 5 year old husky/malamute mix has had an ongoing, intermittent lameness in her left rear knee. About a year ago she came up very lame as though injured although I didn''t see what might have happened. She walked with her foot lifted after first getting up and then would walk more normally after a few steps. I could tell her gait was a little off though. This went on for several weeks and my vets thought she might have a cruciate ligament tear and they put her on Synovi G3 chews. She had several great months where her walk looked completely normal to me but now we''re having the exact same problem again. Assuming this is her condition, will I have to limit her activity forever to avoid surgery? Is there any medication which might help? Is surgery a good option for repairing this injury? One vet said there is nothing to really be done until it tears completely. I hate limiting her activity but I don''t want to hurt her. And I can''t really afford a lot right now. Tried icing..not easy :)

Optional Information:
Age: 5; Female; Breed: northern inuit (I think)

Already Tried:
limited activity, Synovi G3, aspirin for pain...is this a good non-prescription, non-narcotic option for pain?

Accepted Answer

Because she is still having problems then you should strongly consider having the surgery done. It doesn't have to be a complete tear for the surgery to be useful. Even though it may not be financially easy at this time you should try to get saved up for it. It will be her best choice to be able to use the leg as she would normally. Here is a link that gives you more information about this procedure and what expectations you can look for. I hope it helps.
