Can someone who was married through a religious ceremony, and that lived together in the same house (in New Jersey) for two years without an official marriage license, file a joint Federal 1040?

New Jersey is not a state that recognizes common law marriate so they will not be able to file as married filing jointly unless they have been legally married.
