Question

I represent abused and neglected children in our local Children''s Court, and this means I travel into gang territory to visit foster homes, relative placements, and homes of parents trying to get kids back with visits not always being amiable. My 2001 Chrysler Sebring is not reliable anymore, and I need a really safe and trustworthy vehicle asap. I''m thinking about a 2006 or 2007 Honda Accord EX 4door sedan, and I''m looking at CarMax or the local Honda dealer''s certified used lot. Is this a smart decision? Should I be thinking about other cars? Should I be thinking about other places to buy?

Answer

You have not said what climate or geographic part of the country you live in-but right now,you are better off buying new.Honda's hold there resale valve and dealer are trying to sell the new ones and have the benifit from the manufacture.I know of people buying new civics for $2000 off of sticker and being the original owerner you get the factory warranty and a lietime warranty is starting to surface with Honda.Check out the pricing on-line at various dealerships and a vaction trip to get may be well wotrh it.

Reply to Frank's Post: Part of my question was what cars I should be looking at ... I have been assuming Honda. Are there other comparables out there, in terms of reliability over time? In other words, are there cars other than Honda Accords that I should be considering? As for my location, I am in San Antonio, Texas.

Answer

Manufacture preferance is strictly up tp you.Toyota and Honda are both at the top of the list.Another car that you might consider is Subaru.. None of the other manufactors realy stand out like them..How much you looking to spend and what kind og gas mileage do you expect? How many miles a year do you put on?

Reply to Frank's Post: I'm looking at cars in the 15-20K range thinking that my Chrysler will bring the note down on trade-in about 5K. I need good gas mileage, and I put around 6000 miles each year on the car.

Accepted Answer

There are a lot of them. The Toyota Yaris ( 12-14k) and Honda Fit ( 14-18k) range both are rated in the 30 cith and 40 mpg highway range. You would be better selling it out right then trading-Go out and see what kind of a deal you can get---but remember to shop around-they will either try to get a premium for the gas because of the gas mileage or be willing to deal.( I have a Yaris that gets 40-46 on the highway consistantly and at 50,000 miles have done nothing to it-just get the window tinted with the tint that saves heat)
