Question

My male cat had a urinary blockage, by struvite crystals, a month ago and was hospitalized. I have 5 cats and have tried to give him different food( Iams Urinary s) than Taste of the Wild, which my other cats eat. He''s not really interested, and wants the other food. Is there no medicine/supplement/food additive that I can give him to counter the production of these crystals? How about ionized water -which we drink? Also, does he need a more acidic diet, as I have been told the Iams US is?   It would seem that a grain free ( taste of the wild) diet is acidic, as it''s all meat. I''m confused and have to leave town for two weeks to take care of my parents and looking desperately for a solution in the next few days to help my little fellow. My vet says there is nothing but giving him low residue food and I don''t know how to force him to eat it. He is urinating small amounts that sometimes has a little blood, and is lethargic and licks. All the signs, I know. My vet knows.

Answer

Dear Beverly,

I am sorry your boy is ill. There ARE other (homeopathic) things you can do.

First of all your cats should only get bottled spring water. The others have additives.

Two give him methigel: http://www.millpledge.com/preparations/methigel.htm

You can find more information on holistic/homeopathic treatments, here:

http://www.send2press.com/newswire/2006-10-1030-007.shtml
http://www.felinecrf.org/holistic_treatments.htm

A tsp of ground parsley a day.

Many cats dont like renal diets but Royal Canin makes a very palatable one or tr this recipe:

Vets push science diet because they sell it but cats hate it. This was formulated by Hills and given out to vets before science diet was available.

C/D or H/D recipe - feline (also known as Feline Restricted Mineral and Sodium Diet):
1 lb regular ground beef, cooked
1/4 lb liver (beef, chicken or pork only) cooked
1 cup cooked white rice without salt
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 t (5g) calcium carbonate (Tums)
1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride (salt substitute)

Also add a balanced supplement which fulfills the feline minimum daily requirements (MDR) for all vitamins and trace minerals, and 250 mg of taurine per day. This would be available from a veterinary clinic.

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Keep covered in refrigerator. Yield: 1+3/4lbs

Feeding Guide - feed sufficient to maintain normal body weight

Body wt Approx Daily Feeding
5lb 1/5lb
7-8lb 1/4lb
10lb 1/3lb

If taste of the wild is low protein and ash and you give some renal food and methigel it should not hurt him.

Please let me know how he is doing. I hope all will be well.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri

Dear Terri,
Thank you so much for your response. I'm sorry it took me so long-besides 5 cats I have 2 infants here! I have been pouring through your answer, and I am compelled to ask-you keep referring to renal food, and renal problems, when my cat's issue is bladder. Perhaps I needed to clarify that-he had a thickened bladder, and a blockage. Would this information change your response?
I love your website and I will be happy to pay for your expertise, I'd just like to make sure we are on the same page. I asked my vet, who is lovely and makes housecalls, but is so very busy with emergencies that she is very fractured when we speak. she says that she has had very little success with Methigel-but in fact that was exactly the type of thing I was looking for. On the Methigel page it says not to combine with a urinary acidifying diet-and you recommended to combine it. So, I'm a little confused and wish that you would clarify for me? I'm thrilled with the depth of your response-you are a wonderful woman. Thanks in advance for your feedback. Beverly

Answer

Dear Beverly,

Thank you for the compliment. I am sure you are lovely as well.

The reason I suggested the Methigel is because you want him to continue to eat Taste of the wild. He does not need renal acidifying food if he has that BUT we must limit protein as it is difficult for the kidneys to digest it.

The term renal and bladder are almost synonomous.

Crystals and blockages are caused by sticky crystals in the bladder that block the urethra. For patients with repeated blockages we recommend PU surgery which opens up the urethra.

http://marvistavet.com/html/body_urinary_blockage.html

Fortunately struvite crystals are disolveable where calcium oxalate are not so the goal is to keep them from forming.By acidifying the urine we accomplish that aim

Please let me know if you wish to discuss this further.I will always be here for you.

Warmest wishes,

Terri

Dear Terri,

Again, sorry for the delay. The last article you sent was worth the money alone! It taught me how to palpate Hooky's bladder to tell if it was swollen or blocked. I learned that it is not swollen at all, and in fact he turned over and started to purr, and doesnt seem to be tender in the area, unlike when he was blocked. I still can't explain the frequent small urinations but I don't think it's serious, that's for sure. I put paper towel in the litter box and it seems that he is urinating and it's not bloody. I'm thrilled. I still have to take a long term approach to feeding him, I understand, and since Taste of the Wild is grain free and probably has a lot of protein, I guess I will try the Royal Canin, unless you think that Methigel and continuing the Taste of the Wild is a real long term approach, because it is surely the one I like the best? ( You really got where I was going with that, thanks!) Which Royal Canin would you recommend, Feline control? also, does the methigel require a prescription? The Vet across the street doesnt carry it-is it not widely used, as my vet implied?

Thanks a million. I will give you a glowing review because you have given me so much information and gave me the sense there were things I could do. Thank you so very much. It was exactly what I was looking for!

My best,

Beverly

Answer

Hi Beverly,

You are very welcome. It is my pleasure to help someone as lovely as you and your sweet baby.I am so glad he is able to urinate now.

I will always be here for both of you.

You can get methigel in any pet store. Ask your vet to get you the Royal canine renal food. It is a prescription:

Here is info on how to check the bladder:

Thank you Terri! You sent me a link for dog food ( Hooky is a cat), but, are you sure it's THAT Royal Canin, and not the one for struvite crystal production? There's also one for dissolution of struvite crystals, I think. I was confused when I looked between all three, with the renal one as the last one I was going to pick, lol.
