Question

I have nasturtiums planted in window boxes which face west. They are growing very sparsely, the leaves are tiny and yellow in most cases. Flowers have been blooming but again sparsely. I bought them from a greenhouse in June as seedlings and some that I planted in pots on the deck are flourishing better but the leaves are quite pale.

We water every couple days when the soil is dry. The gardening books say not to fertilze Nasturtiums. Potting soil was used with a small amount of packing popcorn in the base instead of rocks. The boxes receive full sun from 10 until noon and then the large oak tree blocks the sun until around 3 p.m. until sundown.

Accepted Answer

Nasturtiums require well-drained soil and full sun. They will grow in partial shade, but will not bloom well under those conditions. They like do a light, sandy poor soil. A fertile soil will produce more growth but less blooms. I suspect since potting soil was used the soil is on the fertile side. That and the lack of full sun is likely the reason they are only blooming sparsely and are pale green in color. Click here for more information.
