Question

Unwanted websites!

Sent to General Experts March 27, 2004 1:11 p.m.

How do I get rid of something downloaded covertly on my computer? When I turn on my computer, websites are re-appearing as shortcuts on my desktop and in my favorites folder, even if I delete them. I’m running XP. Help?

I have XP as well. I would run a registry edit, but ONLY if you know exactly what you are looking for. You can go to start>run> type in "regedit" w/out the quotation marks obviously. Then got to EDIT, then use the FIND button to look for the name of the websites that are on your comp. Delete any values associated JUST with those websites. Let me know if you need help or have any questions. THanks!

Try running some freeware called "Ad-Aware". This software will scan your computer similar to virus scanning software and then will allow oyu to remove almost all unwanted material. To find it, do a search on the web for ad-aware and you will probably find to vendors with this software available for a free download. Some intrusive ad software will hijack your browser or block you from obtaining ad-aware as a way to keep you form cleaning out thereillegal downloads. If this happens let me know and i will send you a copy vis e-mail.

Sometimes you will have some more mainstream site material on your computer that mya not some off and then you will have to attempt action similar to Suzie's post, however, i would not mess around with the registry unless you are quite coimputer literate. i can help oyu via IM or e-mail with that process after you have run "Ad-aware" if you still need assistance.

I've tried the adware...no good. Gonna try and get face to face help, since I'm a little nervous about heading into the registry! Thanks
