Question

I just took my 2yr old, 8.5 lb, chihuahua (mix) dog to the park for a run. In the first few minutes, after running on the grass, he yelped in pain. He can walk but has noticeable limp and wont let me touch it...yelps when i even get close to his front left paw. Maybe a peice of glass, wooden sliver or bee sting? Vet is closed today, Sunday. Not sure if i should wait it out...maybe he can clean it out himself? If not, take him to vet when they open tomorrow, or does this warrant an emergency vet visit at an animal hospital i''ve never been too. Thank you for your help. Sincerely, XXXXX XXXXXXX

Hello,

You can take him to the emergency clinic to have this examined and treated. Though it does sound like it may be a piece of glass or a bee sting. It would be better if you could check the paw over yourself to see what it is. Though if he will not let you anywhere near it then it likely needs to be looked at to make sure it was not a snake bite.

Allowing him to try and lick on it may not be a good idea either. If it is glass he can cut his tongue trying to get it out. A large gash on the tongue is very hard to treat and should it become infected this could cause him to lose the tongue.

If you can put a muzzle on him and have someone hold him down you can examine the paw and remove what is causing the problem.

Hi Walter,

The object appears to be small. He's a little guy and mostly black...making it hard to spot things sometimes.
A muzzle and another person would be ideal. Right now i have neither.
I am planning to take him to my vet when they open tomorrow am. I am not sure this warrants an emergency room visit, with it's hefty price tag. If need be, i will go that route though.

further questions for you:

Would you recommend trying to flush the paw with water?

Is hydrogen peroxide safe? is that poisonous to dogs?
Do you think i have time re. this situation to wait until tomorrow am for a vet visit if he doesn't improve?
The object is small, whatever it is and i don't believe it will put a gash in his tongue.
i'll wait for your response.
thanks so much,

Answer

Hello,

A emergency vet visit is high, and I understand your concern so waiting till tomorrow is fine. Though I would suggest putting a sock over the foot and taping it on to keep him from licking. The problem is even a small piece of glass can cause a nasty cut on the tongue. The tongue is not like skin, it is not tough and with glass it can cut into the tongue very deeply.

You can try to flush the object out with water. As for Peroxide, it can be used on your dog. It is not poisonous for dogs to use this. In fact Peroxide is commonly used to cause dogs to vomit up poisons.

ok, walter. thanks for your help.
i am going to attempt to flush it out and pour some peroxide over it. i'll check on his progress later this evening and in the am, if the limping and soreness persist...will take him to our regular vet in the am.
last question however, if my dog ends up licking a bit of the peroxide, will it make him feel nauseus...like throwing up? or does a dog have to ingest large quantities for this effect to happen?
thanks,

Answer

Hello,

Once you rinse it with peroxide only small amounts will stay on the paw. There would not be enough to make him sick.
