have a 97 yamaha waverunner 760cc. it will not change from reverse to forward while the engine is running. could it be idling too fast

Hi XXXXXXXXXX,
Yes, high idle can cause this, as will an incorrectly adjusted reverse cable. Trolling speed, as Yamaha calls it, should be arout 1700 rpm, or about 2 to 3 mph, smooth water going straight. If you are close to that, check the adjustment of the reverse cable. Look on the side of the bracket at the reverse clamshell and check to see if the roller pin is in between the two lines stamped into the bracket. If the clamshell moves too far, it locks in and won't shift back into F.

Hi XXXXXXXXXX,
You use the stainless steel barrel fitting on the ends of the cable to make your adjustments. Break the lock nut loose then run the fitting in or out on the cable as required to get the round pin on the mechanism in line with the two hash marks on the bracket. You want to make sure you maintain at least 8mm min cable engagement to the adjuster. If you have to run the bottom adjuster too far out, you can give the adjuster on the other end of the cable a few turns out to maintain your minimum engagement.
