Question

My maytag garbage disposal (the kind you put an insert into to start) will not shut off. The insert doesn''t seem to work anymore. The only reason it isn''t running now is because i turned off the power at the breaker. Can this be fixed?

Im sorry but I am unable to find a service manual for your unit.

However I did locate a website with the parts breakdown of your unit. Click here to view that page.

What I do not understand is what you mean by "the kind you put an insert into to start". What insert are you talking about? Is it the sink stopper that activates the unit (item #1 in the breakdown)?

If so then you need a new switch (item #16).

To order the part click here.

Yes, putting the sink stopper in the hole and turning usually turns on the disposal. Tonight i turned on the unit and there was a small knife in the disposal. I could not get the disposal to turn off without turning off the power at the breaker.

Were you able to remove the stopper?

Yes. It will go in and out and will turn just fine but it no longer turns the disposal off. I tried to see if something the stopper would "catch" was missing, but i can't tell.

Answer

Ok flora;

What you need to do is replace the switch on the side of your disposal. It is item number 16 in this diagram.

What has happened is the knife that was left in the unit hit the switch and damaged it so that the stopper would no longer turn it off.

If you are not mechanicly inclined then any handyperson should have no problem replacing the switch for you for a reasonable fee.
