Question

my 6yr old westie tore her acl in june and had surgery on june 15th. She is crated when i am away from the house and is still on a leash when we are in the yard. this week i have an opportunity to spend time at a lake and she is able to swim as tolerated. When she gets up from sitting or sleeping she either limps or is back on 3 legs for awhile. it looks like she is stiff. is there anything else I can do to help her rehab? when standing she still only touches her toes to the ground.

thanks,
pam

Answer

Hello,

Rest and time is the best medicine at this point, the swim may help as well. As she is weightless in water it will give her a opportunity to get some movement and exercise the leg. (Just watch her closely if she appears tired, go ahead and limit her).

For now you can use warm compresses to help alleviate the stiffness. Towels placed in the dyer to warm up can be laid over the leg or on her bedding to allow it to keep it from stiffing up.

This will take some time to heal fully, but continue with the nightly walks to help keep it moving as well.
