Question

Hi, I am having some problems with my St. Augustine grass in Sugar Land, Texas. Everything seemed going well there for awhile and then about 3 weeks or so ago I started to notice some areas of my grass that were turning a sort of yellowish pale color with brown spots on down the blade of grass. The whole yard is not like this, only some sections. I did a little research and from what I read it could be one of several things, such as Chlorosis or Nutrient Lock-Up. I saw a picture out on the internet and it sort of look like it also could be Gray Leaf Spot. How can I tell the difference and how can I treat what ever the problem is????

Normally, I water once or twice a week. Right now temperatures have been running anywhere from the low to upper 90's here. I usually watch it pretty close and make sure that I water anytime that the grass appears be getting a little stressed.

Unfortunately I don't have any images to send.

I usually fetilize about every 6 weeks.

Thanks,
XXXXXXX

The problem is likely a fungus. Gray leaf spot is a possibility and is easy to identify. The grass will develop spots with purple to brown margins that enlarge and become elongated , sometimes diamond shaped. Some of the blades will become yellow. It is best not to let the grass remain damp. If can be controlled with fungicides. Examples recommended for gray leaf spot control, include Spectracide Immunox, Fertilome Systemic Fungicide, Ortho Lawn Disease Control, and Scotts Lawn Fungus Control. The problem is not likely Chlorosis or Nutrient Lock-Up since the entire area would be the same. It is difficult to diagnose a problem such as this without seeing the grass. Since you did checking on the net and found it resembled Gray Leaf Spot most likely it is. You might take a sample to a local landscape company to have them confirm that this is the problem. St. Augustine grass is susceptible to other diseases that can also be controlled with the same fungicides mentioned.
